How To Make a Volkswagen Beetle or Should I Say Bug?

Back in the summer of 1973 at the sprite age of 24 I could finally say I had my own first car! We bought a brand new yellow 1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle which were also affectionately known as "Bugs". Not sure why we were into Volkswagens, maybe better gas mileage at that time. Obviously we liked them as we also owned a 1972 red VW Squareback. Now we had the resources for me to have my own car! Boy, was I excited! I remember my first road trip was out to Hastings, NE to play in a NE state women's golf tournament a few weeks after getting the bug. We had an air conditioner put in it (a rare feature) so I was cruisin' cool. That bug lasted a long time. I still remember reaching in the back seat to buckle up our first child in his car seat - that was a feat to get back there!

Little did I know at the time that one day I would "make" (AKA paint) a Volkswagen Bug!

Last fall I discovered this Bug in the grass near where I live. How excited I was, especially because it was of similar vintage to the model I had owned. The light was awesome, so I captured some fun angles of this orange Bug. I'll be posting a series of paintings on how I made my bug - here's its beginnings.

Hope you enjoy!
